About Florfenicol

Florfenicol is a 3rd generation phenicol. It is very effective against a broad range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative, aerobic and anaerobic bacteria isolated from domestic animals.

Florfenicol is highly lipophilic, a feature that enhances penetration and concentration in tissues and helps the drug distribute into serum, lungs, and the gastrointestinal tract of pigs.

In vitro and in vivo activity of florfenicol have been demonstrated against the most commonly isolated bacterial pathogens involved in PRDC, including Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Pasteurella multocida, Salmonella choleraesuis, Streptococcus suis, and Bordetella bronchiseptica. In addition, in vitro activity has been demonstrated against Mycoplasma spp and Haemophilus parasuis.

Florfenicol belongs to a group of antibiotics that includes chloramphenicol and thiamphenicol. However, as a synthetic fluorinated analogue of thiamphenicol, florfenicol provides significant safety and therapeutic advantages over conventional compounds. As with the other antibiotics in its group, florfenicol exerts antimicrobial activity by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis at the ribosomal level.
