Florfenicol offers in vitro activity against a wide range of bacterial swine
pathogens, including Pasteurella multocida, Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae,
Streptococcus suis, Haemophilus parasuis, Bordetella bronchiseptica, Salmonella choleraesuis,
and Mycoplasma spp.
Excellent efficacy against complex SRD demonstrated in extensive field studies
conducted in the US and Europe.
High-volume tissue distribution.
Good lung diffusion (achieving lung concentrations similar to the serum concentrations).
Bacteriostatic antibiotic but is also a concentration dependent bactericide for P. multocida and non-concentration dependent for A. pleuropneumoniae.
Achieves high serum and lung levels within a very short time, this is important for acute processes such as those involving A. pleuropneumoniae.
Little chance of bacterial resistance; effective against multiple antibiotic-resistant
organisms; not susceptible to chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) enzyme
that deactivates chloramphenicol.
Minimal environmental impacts.
Safe for humans, lacking the chemical group responsible for chloramphenicol’s
human toxicity concerns (bone marrow suppression and aplastic anemia).
High product quality and research-based technical support from MSD Animal Health.
